HST Pocket potholders

7/9/2025

There are a lot of free potholder patterns out there, but I had never made them before and wanted some design options and a better tutorial. I ended up buying a pattern, and it was worth every penny because I have found myself returning over and over to this great pattern from Scratch and Stitch. Not only were the instructions thorough and very easy to follow, I found the shape of the oven mitt to be a little cuter than some of the others online, and I also love the rounded corner and pocket detail on the potholder.
I decided potholders and oven mitts would be my go-to gift this year, and I have made loads of them. I continue exploring the HST shapes, and this pattern was perfect to try out 16-unit (4 x 4) blocks and do some scrap busting.  They are also a perfect size to show off some of my favorite FPP blocks. The snowman is from Center Street Quilts, and a perfect gift for my friend's mom, who collects snowmen and hosted me for a few days over winter break.
I made several with the pockets, but when I didn't want to cut a chunk out of my quilt block, I made a few without it.
I found the curved binding to be a little fussy when using non-bias cut binding, but shifting away from double-fold tap to the classic bias tape maker and making a slightly more narrow tape helped a lot.
